Technology Session

Greetings Writers,

I hope you are having a good week as you explore what writers know and are ready to learn as well the learning experiences you'll provide to get them there.

This is just a reminder that we'll be meeting with Amy in the ERTC on Saturday morning. Please bring photos and ideas for your digital story. The photos may be hard copies or electronic. Have fun with it. For those who are familiar with the process, explore ways to stretch your thinking. You will also spend time with podcasting. Think about potential topics for a transactive piece in the podcasting work on Saturday.

The personal pieces due on Saturday should include a question or two to which you'd like response. Please submit these electronically to sandra.hogue@jefferson.kyschools.us. I'll provide feedback before our next session.

Additionally, remember to apply some aspects of the learning from this week's readings to your own personal writing and/or the work you're doing with kiddos.

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG!

Welcome to our EDAP-693 Spring 2009 blog.

Here are a few reminders of what you should be working on this week.

• Massaging a personal piece of writing for response group
• Analyze the personal writing piece-finding what the writers knows & is ready to learn as well as the learning experiences you might provide to move the writer to more sophisticated thinking. You may wish to use Marker Papers, our course texts, experiences from class & other resources to plan the next lessons. Additionally, review the syllabus for a model of the expectations.
• Be prepared to discuss Davis/Hill chapter 6, 8 & 10, Anderson chapters 1-3 (readings from last week & for this week). To prepare for this discussion, please use an activity called clustering (from the book "Content-Area Writing" by Daniels, Zemelman & Steineke) to capture your associative thinking. Simply put, create a web of your thinking and learning from these readings. Label the center "key ideas from Anderson & Davis/Hill chapters". The stems from this center idea should include an arm for each chapter. From each chapter stem, please include two additional stems for "new ideas I'd like to try" and "other important ideas" from which you'll add as many additional stems as needed. Simply picture a traditional webbing graphic organizer. This preparation will drive the discussion of these chapters. This is my first attempt at creating and using a blog. I'm going to learn about and grow in this form of technology with the students of Teaching Writing P-12. Wish me luck!

Once upon a time, I would have considered myself tech-savvy but I seem to have fallen behind the curve. I've explored digital stories and in fact created one to share at my sister's viewing after her unexpected passing. I have also played a bit with wikis but did not apply the learning with enough regularity to feel comfortable yet. With Amy's help, I'll get there. I can do this!
